The body of a man found floating in a pond at one of Sydney’s most exclusive golf clubs this morning was discovered by contractors “conducting a pest inspection”, police have revealed.

The grisly discovery was made at 9.30am at The Lakes golf course at Eastlakes, south of the city’s CBD. The course has been closed and a crime scene established.

Police said the man was wearing black shorts and blue sneakers when he was found. It’s understood the corpse had “been at the location” for several days before being located.

Officers are being assisted by PolAir and the Marine Area Command, police confirmed to Yahoo News.

“The man is yet to be formally identified and it is not yet known whether the death is suspicious,” NSW Police said in a statement.

The Lakes has been contacted for comment. It’s unknown how long the course will remain closed for.

The 95-year-old club describes itself as one of the leading major tournament venues in Australian golf. It has hosted the Australian Open seven times, four since 2010.

Anyone with information relating to the man’s death is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
